Inside Antwerp's New Generation of Designers

The route between the studios takes under twenty minutes on foot. That proximity matters. Patterns are shared, mills are shared, and so is a certain suspicion of spectacle.

At Maison Verhoeven the room is almost empty: two tables, a rail of coats in three colours, and a wall of numbered orders. "We make fewer things every year," says Lieve Verhoeven. "It is not a strategy. It is what the cloth allows."

A few streets away, Atelier Nord has settled on eight shapes and refuses to add a ninth. The discipline reads as confidence rather than restriction — each season the same trench returns, slightly better cut.

What unites them is a refusal of the seasonal churn. In a city that once exported deconstruction, the new export is patience.
